Which Type of Hypnotherapy is Best for Me?
Article by Denise Douglass
Question:
I'm looking into hypnotherapy, and am trying to find out how the hypnotherapy that you offer, differs from 'traditional' hypnotherapy... can you tell me what the difference is?
Answer from Denise Douglass:
I think I can give you a little bit of an idea as to the difference.
Basically, the aim of suggestion therapy (what people traditionally might think of as hypnotherapy) is to temporarily manage the symptoms of a problem. So, for example, if someone has a speech to do at a wedding, then they could use suggestion therapy to help relieve the stress of the day.
It usually doesn’t have much of a long-term effect, but it can help on the day itself. If there’s another situation where they feel stressed in an ‘under-pressure’ type of situation again, they might need to have the suggestion therapy again.
The advantage to suggestion therapy, is that it can be done in one or two sessions with a therapist, or even by using something like a download to use at home.
However, if the symptom is there because there’s an underlying anxiety (something like social anxiety for example), it’s often better to resolve the root cause of that anxiety, rather than simply manage a symptom.
The aim of Pure Hypnoanalysis, is to resolve the ‘underlying cause’ of the problem. Once the underlying issue that was causing the anxiety to be there in the first place is resolved, the anxiety, and it’s associated symptoms can go.
The advantage of Pure Hypnoanalysis is that if the cause of the anxiety (usually some sort of emotional conflict) is resolved, it tends not to come back, because it’s resolved.
Pure Hypnoanalysis is a course of sessions, with 8 – 10 sessions being typical.
