Why There's More to Losing Weight Than Weight Loss
Article by Paul Douglass
Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight, and has either struggled to lose the weight in the first place, or has piled it all back on again afterwards, will realise that there's a lot more to it than just dieting...
Dieting and Weight Loss
Estimates show, that at any one time, as many as one in three of us are currently on a diet, with over half of us having dieted at some time in our lives.
The truth of the matter is that, for the vast majority of people, 'dieting' on its own just doesn't seem to work in the long term.
The question is: why not?
The answer is surprisingly simple... dieting, in essence, misses the point.
Those who successfully, and permanently lose weight, are not those who simply diet.
They are the ones who change the role that food plays in their life.
They are the ones who are motivated to lose weight, and keep it off.
Psychological Forces
While slimming / dieting alone can indeed help someone to lose weight in the short term, once the diet ends, the weight can (an often does!), creep back on.
This is because dieting alone doesn't address the person's underlying motivations.
Everyone is Different
Of course, it goes without saying, everyone is different, but generally, people will fall into one of two main categories:
1) Those people who have a little bit of weight to lose, and are looking for a little bit of encouragement and motivation to lose weight.
and
2) Those people who have quite a bit of weight to lose, and/or feel that their weight is due to emotions, or some underlying anxiety based problem. This might be someone who feels that they 'comfort eat', or 'eat when stressed', or maybe dive into a bag of sweets or chips when they've had a bad day at work.
...and that is why, where something like therapy is concerned (for example), it's not a case of 'one-size-fits-all'.
For example, a form of therapy that is commonly used for weight loss, is hypnotherapy, and even in hypnotherapy, there are many different options available.
