UK Government Plans to Force Cigarettes Under the Counter

The UK government has announced that it is considering plans to ensure that cigarettes are not placed on display in newsagents, petrol stations and other shops, and are instead to be sold from 'under the counter'.

The move is in an attempt to stop children for smoking.

The announcement also includes cigarette vending machines in pubs, clubs and restaurants.

This latest announcement, following on from the UK's ban on smoking all in public places in July 2007, will rely on the principle of 'out of sight, out of mind'.

A consultation document will be put forward by the Department of Health in the next few months, and the law, if it agreed, could come into force before the end of 2008.

UK Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo said "It's vital we get across the message to children that smoking is bad. If that means stripping out vending machines or removing cigarettes from behind the counter, I'm willing to do that"… "Children who smoke are putting their lives at risk and are more likely to die of cancer than people who start smoking later."

A ban on displaying cigarettes is already in force in parts of Australia and Canada.

The proposed ban on displaying cigarettes will inevitably face opposition from those selling cigarettes.  Many opposition groups claim that the ban on displaying cigarettes will have little or no effect upon cigarette consumption.

The ban on smoking in public places in 2007 is thought to have reduced the number of adults who smoke by around 2%.
