- Low self-esteem - Someone with a low self-esteem is more likely to develop depression due to their pessimistic outlook on life.
- Illness - Physical illness and medical conditions can contribute to depression, not only due to their psychological ramifications (stress), but also because of the persons weakening health and reduced ability to cope.
- Genetics - A person can inherit a predisposition to depression from the parents. This does not mean that they will get depression, it simply means that they are more likely to develop depression than 'average'.
