Emetophobia - The fear of being sick / The fear of vomiting.
Emetophobia is a phobia of being sick (vomiting), where the sufferer might actively avoid any situation which might bring with it the possibility of vomiting.
The effects of emetophobia.
The fear of being sick can make a wide range of everyday situations very uncomfortable for the sufferer. These situations might include for example:
- Women with emetophobia might avoid starting a family, due to the fear of the sickness that pregnancy can often cause.
- Avoiding family holidays or business trips which may involve flying, because of the possibility of feeling sick while flying
- The person might avoid certain types of food
- An emetophobic might avoid alcoholic drinks
- The person may feel the need to avoid the doctors surgery or hospitals, because of the fear of seeing other people who might be ill or may be sick at any time
- The person might not be able to have pets around the house, in case they get sick
- The suffer might have an obsession with cleanliness, and might avoid restaurants because the cleanliness of the kitchen cannot be guaranteed.
- Emetophobes often avoid putting themselves in any situation that has a rotating or undulating physical movement, such as on a boat or roller-coaster
- Someone suffering from emetophobia may panic or feel excessively anxious if someone else in their household is ill, in fear of contracting the illness themselves. In severe cases, the emetophobic may refuse to eat for the duration of the other persons illness.
- The person might avoid reading books, magazine articles, television programmes or films where they might see or read about someone being sick

How to overcome emetophobia
The one thing we'd like to say right from the start, is don't worry, you CAN overcome emetophobia when you know how.
What we've found over the years, is that there are a few simple techniques that you can use to overcome emetophobia.
Sometimes, people who have emetophobia can often feel quite out of control and negative about things, because it can sometimes feel like they're stuck with it, and there's nothing that can be done about it (which of course there is!).
So the first thing to understand if you're looking to get over your emetophobia, is that that there IS something that can be done, and even that in itself can help you feel a bit more in control right from the start.
Sometimes, it might feel like people are judging you negatively because of your emetophobia, and so overcoming emetophobia can also have the added bonus of feeling less judged.
So, as we say, don't worry... we've found over the years, that there are a few simple techniques that you can use to overcome emetophobia... you CAN overcome emetophobia when you know how... it just might be that you need someone to show you how!

Dear Paul and Denise,
I just wanted to say THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH for being so incredibly patient, understanding, helpful, lovely, trustworthy and genuinely nice during the last few months and, most of all, for bringing those AMAZING changes into my life.
I had hoped for some improvement when I came to see you the first time, but I never ever imagined that so many things would be sorted out and that I would feel that much better -- not just about relationships but about myself in general.
It was another failed relationship that made me go and get professional help, not being entirely convinced that there was much I could do about my pattern -- which was always ending up with the wrong guy. But rather than waiting for Mr. Right, I thought it was better to do something about it. And I am so glad I did! My views, opinions and feelings have completely changed.
Along the line, my fear of seeing others being sick and the fear of being sick myself somehow disappeared and I would have never believed before that this could be cured. And guess what? I saw "The Last King of Scotland" on Saturday and there is a scene where the guy vomits and it did not bother me at all. I was so happy that your magic had worked that I actually enjoyed watching it. Spooky!
I really did enjoy the sessions -- with both of you -- they were good fun and you made me laugh so many times -- and they were definitely the most interesting thing I have experienced in my life so far.
I will never forget you and what you did for me - Thank you so, so much!
All the best, take care and see you soon,
Kerstin

To Denise,
This is just a small way to say a very BIG thank you! Little did I know what a difference you would make to my life on that day I met you.
I remember how low I felt and how lost I was in my life. Day to day things were controlling me - not the other way round - as it is now.
I actually quite like being me now! Life is far too short and I am so pleased I did something about making mine better!
I hope you continue to change lives and also know how much you can make a difference to the people you work with.
Thank you so much once more!
Take care and God Bless.

Dear Paul,
I would just like to say thank you for how much you have helped me with my Emetaphobia.
I came to see you because I would be starting my teacher training in a few months time and I knew becoming a teacher was something I would be unable to do with Emetaphobia controlling me.
I was unsure what to expect when I first came to see you and to be honest I didn’t think that anything could cure me. My fear of sick was ruining my life and it controlled where I went and who with. Therefore, I was delighted when a few weeks into the therapy I was suddenly able to watch people being sick on TV (something that I have never done in my life!) and the issue of being sick was no longer in the back of my mind all the time.
I am glad to tell you that I have started my teaching course and I have already had a couple of students telling me that they feel sick but thanks to you I was able to deal with the situation without an ounce of worry!
Thanks so much,
Sarah
