Why Dieting Misses the Point
Dieting misses the point, because it doesn’t take into account just how big a part our emotions play in our weight.
Let’s suppose we’ve decided to go on a diet.
We have a bad day at work, or the kids are noisy, or the bills are piling up... we feel stressed, or anxious, and need something to help us.
Normally we’d comfort eat. But now we’re on a diet, we suddenly realise that we can’t have that either! - That just makes the stress or anxiety worse!
What usually happens of course, is that we have the thing anyway, and feel bad about ourselves afterwards.
Does that sound familiar?
The Problem with Excess Weight...
If we ask people who want to lose weight, what actual problem their weight is causing them in their life at the moment, we can see a common theme...
- “I feel judged by others because of my weight”
- “I’m worried about my health... I feel like I’m doing myself harm”
- “I feel like I lack confidence because of my weight”
- “I feel unattractive”
- “I feel embarrassed doing things”
- “I don’t feel I can do as many things as I’d like to”
- “I sometimes feel like my friends are just being ‘polite’”
- “I feel unfit”
- “I’d really like to be able to buy better clothes”
- “I just feel like my weight is holding me back”
- “I worry about the example I’m setting for my children”
- “I often feel like people are talking behind my back”
... every one of these things are about how we feel about ourselves.
What Do We Worry About?
The same thing happens if we ask people what they worry about...
- “I’m worried about my health... I might develop diabetes, or have a heart attack”
- “I’m worried that my weight is never going to go down.... it might even go up”
- “People might laugh at me”
- “I’m going to get stuck in a rut”
- “I worry I’m never going to feel confident in myself”
- “I’m worried my partner is going to find me unattractive”
- “I worry that if my fitness gets any worse, I won’t be able to do anything at all soon”
- “I doubt that I’ll ever be able to get a boyfriend / girlfriend”
- “I’m going to have to wear these baggy clothes for the rest of my life”
- “I worry that my children will pick up my bad habits”
- “When I diet, I feel like I’m missing out on the things I like”
- “I’m worried that I’m going to have to feel hungry to stand any chance of losing weight”
- “I’m worried that if I diet again, I’m going to fail again”
The list goes on and on... and if any of this sounds familiar... again, don’t worry, lots of us have been there!
